There is a popular saying that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Yes, it is absolutely true but I think this statement needs a subtle modification. Along with the eyes, beauty lies in the geography of the beholder too. Yes, you heard it right, people from different geographical areas have different tendencies of seeing other human beings. An ideal woman body is different for different countries.
There is nothing like “perfect body”. Every person in this world has a different perspective. The response you get completely depends on the who you are asking to and where he is from.
Recently, an online pharmacy from the UK named Superdrug Online Doctors created an innovative project called “Projection of Perfection”. This project features 18 photoshopped pictures of the same woman. For this out of the box project, the company hired photoshop professionals from all over the world. They picked a stock image from Shutterstock and asked these designers to edit the image in such a way that it perfectly reflects the beauty standards of their specific countries.
“Widely held perceptions of beauty and perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and men. The goal of this project is to better understand potentially unrealistic standards of beauty and to see how such pressures vary around the world.”, said one of their press releases.
Of all the 18 designers that Superdog hired, 14 were women and 4 were men. Superdrug predominantly wanted to highlight the perception of a woman on her culture’s beauty standard. However, since 4 designers were men, Superdrug asked them to edit the image in such a way that it is based on different kinds of messages women in their countries receive about what an ideal body should look like.
Superdrug gave all the designers a complete freedom to edit the image in any way they want. They could change whatever they wanted, from body shape to shoe style. Of course, designers took full advantage of this liberty and came up with some stunning results. They changed everything from the size of her waistline to shoe and hair colour to mould the photo into the ideal body type of that culture.
Some of the images shown were only slightly altered while some images saw dramatic changes. Some of them were altered to such a great extent that the original image was barely recognisable.
